I was born and brought up in Cheltenham and on leaving school trained as a Secondary school teacher, initially holding posts in Cheltenham, Windsor and Bradford. In 1966 I was appointed to a lectureship at what is now the University of Derby where I taught until I retired. Beside my teaching related qualifications, I hold the degree of B Phil. from Birmingham and an M Sc. from Leicester. I have lived in South Derbyshire for the last 30 years and am married with two daughters. I have a long-time interest in the sport of volleyball at which I qualified as an international referee and have served on the Executive Board and Commissions of the sport since 1973. Part of my remit was to establish conduct and disciplinary procedures for the game and this led in 2000 to my appointment to the newly formed national body 'The Sports Dispute Resolution Panel' as a Lay Arbitrator. I was selected to join the SDDC Standards Committee when it was set up in 2001, its role being to uphold and promote ethical and behavioural standards in local government. I have been privileged to Chair this body since 2003.
